Waterproof Speakers – and the challenges within.

As smart devices like cameras and watches become more advanced and find their way into water sports, the demand for integrated audio functions is rising. This development brings a unique challenge: making not only the device but also its speaker waterproof.

While components like camera lenses and displays can be effectively sealed using standard techniques, speakers require special attention. Unlike other parts, speakers need an open outlet to transmit sound, making waterproofing far more complex.

Some manufacturers use an external waterproof membrane to protect the speaker. However, this approach significantly reduces sound quality and frequency response due to the small diaphragm size typical in micro speakers. As a result, this less effective method is not considered in the current discussion, pointing instead to the our special design.

This White Paper explores the challenges in designing a waterproof speakers. It explains how the OWS-061230L-8A withstands water pressure equivalent to a 50-meter depth (5 atm), thanks to a patented mechanical design that reinforces the diaphragm without compromising audio quality.
